A Charlotte venture capital firm just landed a nod from one of fintech's most respected industry voices.
RevTech Labs Capital is competing for a national title. The firm made the finalist list for Finovate's Top Fintech VC Award. Winners will be announced Sept. 10 at FinovateFall in New York City.
Finovate is a well-known organization in the fintech sector. The entity runs conferences and hosts an annual awards program recognizing top companies and investors in financial technology.
A panel of judges decides the finalists and winners each year. Dan Roselli, co-founder and managing director of RevTech Labs Capital, said the judging panel includes representatives from major financial institutions.
"That is people from Mastercard, J.P. Morgan, Wells Fargo, Citizens, Deutsche Bank, Grasshopper Bank," Roselli said.
This marks the first time RevTech Labs Capital, the firm's venture fund arm, has been a finalist in this specific category. RevTech Labs Foundation, the nonprofit that runs the company's startup accelerator, was previously a finalist for a top global accelerator award. Finovate has since retired that category.
RevTech Labs Capital was also named the top early-stage fintech fund in the country by Startup Savant in 2023.
Roselli said the accelerator and the venture fund operate as separate legal entities. The accelerator recruits founders from around the world and accepts a small fraction of applicants. Roselli said the fund invests in the strongest companies that come through that pipeline.
"We skim the cream off the top of a really big applicant pool," Roselli said. "Therefore that makes for very good investments."
RevTech Labs Capital has completed 24 startup cohorts and is now accepting applications for its 25th. The firm typically makes more than 100 investments per fund, a larger number than many traditional venture funds.
Roselli said the firm's first two venture funds drew mostly local and regional investors. He said a Finovate win could help attract national and institutional investors, including banks, to the firm's next fund.
"This will give us the ability to branch out in our next fund to some national players and some institutional people like banks," Roselli said.
Roselli said a win in September would send a broader message about Charlotte's standing in the venture capital industry.
"It shows that world class venture investing can be done in Charlotte and from Charlotte," Roselli said.
